The game is not really optimized that well and suffers with performance related problems. We are taking a look at the crashes, that the players are complaining about over the forums. Here are are some fixes.

Serious Sam 4 – Game is Crashing – How to fix

Windows 10 Version 1909 or above is recommended

If you go to the Steam page of Serious Sam 4, you will notice that “Windows 10 64-bit (1909)” is recommended under system requirements. So make sure that your Windows 10 is updated at least to version 1909. And this game is not supported on Windows 7 or on Windows 8.1. If you don’t know how to check your Windows version, here is how to do it:

  1. Press Windows+R keys on your keyboard
  2. Type winver and press enter

Your build details will pop up in a small window. It should look something like this:

As you can see I am using the latest version, which is Version 2004.

Are your Video Drivers updated?

If you are a Nvidia user then you can directly update your driver from the Geforce Experience application. You can also download the driver directly from the link below. The latest version is v456.38

If you are an AMD user then you can find the latest Adrenaline driver from the link given below. “Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.9.1 Optional” is the version you need to download. It is an optional driver but that shouldn’t cause any problem.

Terminate any sort recording or overclocking utilities

Close any kind of recording or overclocking utility that is running on your PC. Overclocking applications like the RivaTuner or MSI Afterburner, are causing crashes for a lot of games. Sadly, Serious Sam 4 is one of them. Even the slightest change in the base memory clock or core clock via an overclocking application is causing the game to crash after few minutes. A lot of games had the same problem. So it is better to stay on the safe side.

Verify Serious Sam 4 on Steam

You can actually verify the in-game files of Serious Sam 4 to check whether your system is missing any files that might be causing the game to crash or freeze:

  • Head over to your Steam Library
  • Look for Serious Sam 4 and right click on the game
  • Click on Properties
  • Click on the Local Files tab
  • Select Verify Integrity of Game Files

The process might take some time so be a little patient. Once the verification is done, restart Steam once.

Compatibility issue with some Antivirus Software

In some cases, the game’s save data may be getting silently quarantined by some antivirus software, resulting in the game crashing to desktop between chambers or after collecting chamber rewards. The developers are working to resolve this; in the meantime, you may need to disable Real-Time Scanning function or Real-Time Protection function of your Anti-virus to play.

If you are using Windows Defender instead of a third-party AV software then here is how to add Serious Sam 4 on the exceptions list of Windows Defender:

  • Go to Windows 10 settings
  • Click on Update & Security
  • Select Windows Security from the left sidebar
  • Click on Virus & threat protection
  • Under Virus & threat protection click on Manage settings
  • Under Exclusions click on Add or remove exclusions
  • Click on Add an exclusion
  • Select File
  • Select the .exe or executable file of Serious Sam 4
  • Restart your PC

Grant administrator rights to Steam

Launching Steam with administrator rights might solve your problems. Here is how to do it:

  • Go to the folder where you have installed Epic Games Launcher
  • Right-click on steam.exe and select Properties
  • Go to the Compatibility tab
  • Click Change settings for all users
  • Under Settings, check Run this program as administrator
  • Click Apply

Re-installation is your last resort (Try only if nothing works)

If none of the fixes mentioned above work for you then try to do a fresh installation of the game. Game installations go wrong all the time. A file might have gone corrupted during the installation process. And that might be the reason why the game is crashing for you. So do a fresh installation of the game once. Before you go for the re-installation, make sure you empty your “Temp” folder.

  • Go to the Start menu on your Desktop.
  • Press the Windows key+R at the same time.
  • Type in %TEMP% and press Enter.
  • Select All (Edit > Select All or Ctrl+A).
  • Click the Delete key.

Note : It is not guaranteed that these steps or methods will fix your issue 100%. These are just some basic steps that we would recommend you to try until the developers release a patch to optimize the game.

These are all the steps we have for the time being. All the steps listed are basic steps and does not require you to take any advanced measures. Some of these steps or methods might work for you but nothing is guaranteed. As performance issues can vary from user to user. We will keep on adding new steps or fixes as we progress further in the game.
