What is Mass in Starfield

Starfield is finally out, and it has a ton of aspects for players to dig into. It has got a ton of resources, backgrounds, planets, factions, weapons, and a lot of other items for you to discover. Now, whenever you are picking up items, especially weapons, you will notice some description about them once you spot them in your inventory. For example, in case of weapons, you will be able to see its:

  • Name
  • Weapon Type
  • Damage
  • Value
  • Mass

Now, the top four points are pretty self-explanatory. But it looks like, it is the “Mass” part where players are scratching their heads. If you are, too, wondering what is Mass in Starfield, you have come to the right place.

What is Mass in Starfield

Mass in Starfield is nothing but the Weight of the item. If you open your inventory and look in the bottom-left corner, you will notice your Mass Capacity. The number on the right is your Total Mass Capacity or Weight Capacity that you can carry, and the number on the left is the Mass that you are carrying at the moment. Everything you pick up or drop will affect the number on the left.

Now, one might ask, why did Bethesda go for “Mass” and not “Weight”. To that Reddit user /afonsolage has the perfect explanation:

I just want to point out that Starfield uses mass to limit the inventory carrying capacity, not weight, so gravity doest matter.

I’m pointing this out, because many people are wondering if the planet gravity would interfere with carrying capacity, so to make it clear, BGS is using mass on purpose, since it doest change based on gravity.

Mass is based on the amount of matter an object has. Weight is the amount of gravitational force that an object has.

There you go, that should explain everything.
