You’ll need to start a “gear trade” with your companion (the one you want to switch weapons with). Trade the particular weapon with your companion and ensure it’s in their inventory. Once it is, all you need to do is to access their inventory and equip the said weapon by pressing “Y”.
To start a gear trade, contact the companion and initiate a conversation (A). Here, from the dialogue prompt, select “Let’s trade gear.” to start the trading and hence the process. You can exchange the desired weapon with your companion by pressing the LB button to open your inventory. Once here, hover over the weapon and press A to exchange the weapon with your companion.
NOTE: Make sure you assign your companion a weapon with infinite ammo. A cutter, perhaps. If they run out of ammunition, they won’t be able to use that particular weapon, and it’ll lie around in their inventory, and yes, this might be why your companion isn’t using the weapon you just traded with them!
