Spelunky 2 | Game won’t launch | Crashing at startup | How to fix

Spelunky 2 has finally been released on the PC or Windows Platform. Players were eagerly waiting for the launch ever since the game came out for the consoles. The game is a really awesome platformer that everyone should try.

But as we all know, games these days don’t come without bugs and glitches. Same is the case with Spelunky 2. A lot of players have been complaining lately, that they are being unable to launch the game via Steam. And this problem has nothing to do with their PC hardware. That is why we decided to put all the fixes recommended by the community in one place, so that players don’t have to check multiple sources for them.

How to fix this issue

[Note : Every single fix mentioned in this article has been recommended by the community of Spelunky 2]

Windows 10 64-bit is mandatory for Spelunky 2

The PC version of Spelunky 2 does not support any other OS other than Windows 10, that too the 64-bit version. So if you have a different OS installed then you are out of luck here. Neither this game will run on Windows 7, nor will it run on Windows 8.1 or Linux. I know this is not really a fix, but this is something everyone should know.

Whitelist Spelunky 2 on your Anti-Virus Software

If you go and look at the Steam discussions page of Spelunky 2, you will notice that a lot of people have posted about how their Anti-virus software is blocking the exe file of Spelunky 2, thinking that it is a virus.

Anti-Virus software hooks very deep into user systems and can affect disk and network operations which can cause crashes in games. Some games also use copy protection technology that can appear as malicious software to an AV scanner, resulting in potential false-positive alerts.

Try disabling your Anti-Virus software temporarily and then run Spelunky. It may also be necessary to add exceptions for Spelunky 2 in your AV configuration.

If you are using Windows Defender instead of a third-party AV software then here is how to add Spelunky 2 on the exceptions list of Windows Defender:

  • Go to Windows 10 settings
  • Click on Update & Security
  • Select Windows Security from the left sidebar
  • Click on Virus & threat protection
  • Under Virus & threat protection click on Manage settings
  • Under Exclusions click on Add or remove exclusions
  • Click on Add an exclusion
  • Select File
  • Select the .exe or executable file of Spelunky 2
  • Restart your PC

Verify the Spelunky 2 files via Steam

  • Open your Steam Library
  • Right click on Spelunky 2
  • Click on Properties
  • Click on the Local Files tab
  • Select Verify Integrity of Game Files

These are all the fixes we have at the moment for people for whom Spelunky 2 is crashing and won’t launch. We will be adding more soon.
