The Merlin Trials are quite different from the other puzzles in Hogwarts Legacy, in the sense that their solutions would involve various approaches that one needs to take to solve it with the help of magic. Like the Trial with the Moonstone Pillars.
In the case at hand of the Merlin Trial, you will have to locate the gem clusters of Moonstones near the central stone plate of the puzzle in three obelisks. In the puzzle, to solve it, you have to complete the trial by activating these pillars.
How to Solve Moonstone Pillar Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Legacy
Some people my also call it the “Pillar Puzzle Merlin Trial.” This trial might seem a little complicated at the first look. This is because the moonstone crystals inside the obelisk’s hollow cannot be interacted with or destroyed either, like you can in the open world. However, as an advantage, the game actually only requires you to know one thing, an early game spell, “Lumos.” You will notice several glowing moths hovering around the area near the Moonstone pillars. They’re the key to activate the Merlin Trial.
Similar to the way you used Lumos in the Moth Mirror puzzles in the game to guide the moths to their frame, you need to use your wand’s light to direct the moths to the obelisks. To frame it in a better way:
- Walk to the glowing moths.
- Cast Lumos.
- Walk to one of the columns with Moonstone.
- Repeat this two more times.
You have now cleared the trial, and you’ll receive your XP reward and the Challenge progression.
Although each of the above types of puzzle is solved by this method, not all trials will have this layout. For example, the first such trial would be easy to do, the one that you find on the hill north of the main road. Here, the glowing moths are easily found. On the other side, the trial near the Forbidden Forest’s Hippogriff Den would be guarded by poachers. So you will need to use spells like Depulso and Incendio to clear the way and reach the moths. In these trials, you need to use Revelio too to find the objects of interest, which is of essence to solve the puzzle.
