DirectX 11 or Vulkan in Baldur’s Gate 3 – Which is the best?

Bladur’s Gate 3 DirectX 11 or Vulkan – There are different graphics APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) in Baldur’s Gate 3 to choose from, and while not many players know this, choosing the right one can make all the difference. This could be in terms of FPS performance, stability, and a few other minor factors that you might need to reel in while trying to get the most out of the game.

DirectX 11 or Vulkan is the question that needs answering in this scenario, and we will do just the same for you, keep reading till the end!

DirectX 11 or Vulkan – Which is best in Baldur’s Gate 3?

We recommend that you opt for Vulkan as the default API, but before you do that, know that the game’s Vulkan implementation is still in early access. Early access indirectly means a load of bugs and errors you might face while trying to play the game. Hence, we also recommend that you try to go with Vulkan as the default API, but if you face any issues while doing so, try to switch to DirectX 11 to see if that makes any difference.

As you make the switch, if you notice that the graphics have either got sharper or brighter or even if you’ve just noticed a slight performance increase, you might’ve been using the wrong API until now and making the switch was probably for the best. On the other hand, if you notice that the graphics have become blurry, or there’s an FPS drop, or the graphics have just lost a bit of brightness overall, you might need to switch back to the one you were using!

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, here’s how you could change the API that you’re currently using:

Start the game, and as soon as the client launches, you’ll notice two radial buttons – DirectX 11 and Vulkan. Click on the one you’ll be looking to try out and keep an eye out for the aforementioned details. If you’re satisfied with what you see, we recommend staying with the setting you’ve just opted for. If not, though, making the switch back has never been easier!

Vulkan in Baldurs Gate III

One thing that you need to know about Vulkan is that it’s a low-level API, which leads us to know that it’s closer to your hardware, meaning less intermediary software. This ensures that there’s less overhead load, resulting in increased performance. Generally, Vulkan and DirectX 12 are better options than DirectX 11, which makes Vulkan our default recommendation!
