Total War Rome Remastered – Game is crashing and won’t launch – How to fix

After almost 17 years, Total War: ROME is back again. And this time it has been remastered to fit 2021 standards. Total War Rome Remastered lets you relive the legacy that defined the award-winning strategy game series. Remastered to 4K with multiple improvements to visuals as well as refinements to gameplay.

Don’t get me wrong, Total War Rome is a decent title. But that doesn’t take away the fact that it has it’s fair share of performance issues. This guide will show you some steps to fix the crashing issues and the launch issues in the game.

How to fix the crashing and launch issues

I was personally facing the launch issue myself. I tried a lot of methods but didn’t find much success. After some research, I came by a fix that was originally intended for Total War Warhammer. Apparently Warhammer had the exact same issues during launch. So, I decided to try the fix once. And to my surprise, it actually worked! The fix was suggested by a user called /Haka on the Total War forums. Here it is:

Hey!

Friend of mine had same issue wayback.

We managed to fix his issue by changing hes windows resolution to 1280×720 and then added launch options for the game through steam “-w1280 -h720”.

This manage to launch the game and afterwards he changes the resolution back to normal and removed launch options and game now worked normally.

I have no logical answer why this fix works.

Let me explain. According to the fix, you have to change the resolution of Windows to 1280×720 first. Then add the following launch option to Total War Rome Remastered on Steam. The process is fairly easy.

  1. Go to your Steam library
  2. Right click on Total War Rome Remastered
  3. Select properties
  4. Enter -w1280 -h720 inside the box under “Launch Options”

Now launch the game. If you successfully manage to launch the game without any crashes then change your Windows resolution back to default and remove the launch options.

That is all you have to do. I can personally confirm that this works. If it doesn’t for you. Then you can always try the obvious methods like verifying the game files, disabling your anti-virus, updating your graphics drivers, re-installing the game in the different location, etc.
