How to Fix Crashing and Freezing in The Medium
The Medium is finally here and, so far the game has had a good enough launch. You can easily tell that by looking at the reception is got from the community.
It is one of the first AAA launches of 2021, so it definitely has a lot to prove. The Medium also has its own bundle of issues though. A lot of posts have started popping up on the Steam discussions page. And most of these posts are about the performance issues that players are experiencing in the game at the moment. It looks like The Medium is crashing and freezing for a lot of users who bought the game on PC. Yes, players with really high-end gaming rigs are not experiencing the crashes and freezes that frequently. But things are not the same for every player. People with low-medium end hardware are facing crashing issues constantly. If you are one of them, then here are some steps you can follow to fix those issues.
Before you move forward in this article, make sure that the hardware on your system is somewhat identical to the recommended requirements of The Medium. There is no point looking the minimum requirements because they will allow you to run the game at 1080p 30fps only, that too at the low preset. Check your graphics card software and make sure it’s updated
- If you are using an Nvidia GPU, please use NVIDIA GeForce Experience to check that you are up to date with your drivers.
- If you are using an AMD GPU, please use RADEON Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition to check that you are up to date with your drivers.
Steam File Verification Method
Every launcher nowadays offers ways to verify the game files of the games, which would repair the corrupted files that might be causing issues. Here is how to do it on Steam:
- Head over to your Steam Library
- Right-click on The Medium
- Select Properties
- Click on the Local Files tab
- Click on Verify Integrity of Game Files
The entire process might take a while as The Medium is quite large is size. So be patient and avoid doing heavy tasks during this period.
Overclocking could lead to Crashing and Freezing
If by any chance you are witnessing random crashes in The Medium, then chances are it is being caused by an overclocking application or utility running in the background. A lot of games have been suffering from crashes lately due to applications like MSI Afterburner or Zotac firestorm. I have personally experienced this issue while running an overclocked RTX 2060 Super. So it is best to stay on the safe side and run your graphics card on default speeds.
Disable Steam Input for The Medium
I would recommend that you go and disable Steam Input for The Medium. Here is how to do it:
- Launch Steam
- Go to your Library and right-click on The Medium
- Select Properties
- Select the General tab
- Now set “Steam Input Per-game settings” to “Forced Off”
- Also uncheck “Enable Steam Overlay while in-game”
- Restart Steam
But remember, if you are a controller user then you might face some issues after disabling Steam Input.
Install Pending Windows 10 Updates
Microsoft keeps on releasing buggy updates for Windows 10 now and then. You might be sitting with one installed on your OS without you having any idea about it. In that case just go and check whether you have pending Windows updates or not. The recent build of Windows 10 is probably one of the most stable build I have seen in a while. So updating your Windows 10 to the latest version is probably the best thing to do at this moment.
Re-install The Medium (Only if nothing else works)
If none of the fixes mentioned above work for you then this is your last resort. Game installations go wrong all the time. A file might have gone corrupted during the installation process. And that might be the reason why the game is crashing for you. So do a fresh installation of the game once.
Before you go for the re-installation, make sure you empty your “Temp” folder.
- Go to the Start menu on your Desktop.
- Press the Windows key+R at the same time.
- Type in %TEMP% and press Enter.
- Select All (Edit > Select All or Ctrl+A).
- Click the Delete key
Wait for patches from Bloober Team
We have to keep in mind that Bloober Team is a fairly new group of developers. Other than the Blair Witch Project, they haven’t had big gaming titles under their name. The Medium is undoubtedly their biggest project so far. Bugs are glitches are understandable at the moment. So be patient and give them some time. I am pretty sure that they will be releasing a patch to fix the crashing issues pretty soon.
