The Medium won’t launch. What is the reason?
The Medium is one of the most anticipated gaming titles of the year 2021, and you can easily tell by looking at the hype surrounding the game since it was announced.
But not everything is perfect for the game at this very moment. Why is that? A lot of posts have started popping on the Steam discussions page at this very moment. And what are these posts about? Well, it looks like a lot of players are having problems at getting the game to launch. The effort to start the game on PC is getting failed for a lot of users. Now for some, it could be because of the low powered hardware in their systems. Which could be a reason, as looking at the requirements you can easily tell that The Medium is an extremely demanding title. And there are already news about some performance issues. But even people who are sitting with RTX 3080s and Ryzen 7 5800Xs are also facing this issue. So one thing is confirmed, this problem has nothing to do with PC hardware. Maybe for some, but definitely not for everyone.
Now the main question is, are there any fixes for this issue? You see the problem is, it is hard to say specifically what is causing this issue. Startup issues can be triggered by various things. And the situation is different for different users. And if the issue is from the side of developers, then forget fixing it by yourself. Still, here are some fixes that you can try.
How to fix this issue?
Before you forward with this guide, make sure that you are using Windows 10. If you are not, then there is no point reading this guide any further. The Medium runs only on Windows 10 and, that too only on the 64-bit version. The Steam page of The Medium has specifically mentioned this. If you are someone who uses Windows 7, 8.1 or a 32-bit OS, then you are out of luck here.
The first thing you should consider doing is, try running the executable file or .exe file of The Medium as admin. Just head over to the folder where you have installed The Medium. Right click on themedium.exe and select Properties. Now click on the Compatibility and check the box beside “Run this program as an administrator”. Start the game directly by double-clicking on the exe file, instead of launching it from your Steam Library.
Then there is the good old file verification method. Just right-click on The Medium from your Steam Library, click on Properties, select the Local Files tab and then click on the ‘Verify Integrity of Game Files’ button. Also, make sure that you are using the latest version of Visual C++ redistributable, as there’s a chance it hasn’t been installed correctly.
Check whether your Anti-virus software is blocking The Medium or Steam. This has happened to a lot of games last year. Even some AAA titles had this issue. The executable of The Medium or Steam may be getting silently quarantined by some antivirus software, preventing the game from launching. Therefore, you may need to disable Real-Time Scanning function or Real-Time Protection function of your Anti-virus to play. If you do not want to completely disable the software, then you will have to add the .exe of The Medium on the Exceptions list of your AV Software.
Don’t have a third-party Anti-virus software on your system, and using Windows Defender instead? Here is how to add The Medium on the exceptions list of Windows Defender:
- Go to Windows 10 settings
- Click on Update & Security
- Select Windows Security from the left sidebar
- Click on Virus & threat protection
- Under Virus & threat protection click on Manage settings
- Under Exclusions click on Add or remove exclusions
- Click on Add an exclusion
- Select File
- Select themedium.exe
- Restart your PC
And finally, if none of the fixes mentioned above work for you then there is no other choice but to re-install the game completely. We are still testing the game. More fixes on the way!
