How to Fix The Finals Out of Video Memory Error

The Finals is finally here, and people who enjoyed the beta can finally resume again. But there is a problem. A lot of people are facing crashes, and getting an error called “Out of Video Memory.”

This is actually an old error and was present in the beta, as well. Here is what you can do to fix it.

How to Fix The Finals Out of Video Memory Error

Here are the fixes that have been recommended from the community:

Force the game to launch in Windowed Mode

Go to The Finals in your Steam Library, right-click on it, and select Properties. In the General window, you will notice “Launch Options”. Type “-windowed” (Without the quotes) inside the box. This will force the game to launch in windowed mode, allowing you to launch the game.

How to force The Finals to run in windowed mode

You can try to press Alt+Enter if you get a black screen prior to the error. This will switch to Windowed mode and may allow you to run the game.

Assign your Monitor Resolution

set the launch options for the game to be your screen resolution. I have a 1440p monitor, so I need to type “-w 2560 -h 1440” (Without the quotes). If you have a 1080p monitor, then you need to type “-w 1920 -h 1080”.

You can try setting a lower resolution to launch the game.

Edit the Config File

This fix has been recommended by an user called /crowdozer:

mine kept saying out of video memory too which was weird for a 3080. i fixed mine by editing my config file.

mine was at: %LOCALAPPDATA%/Discovery/Saved/Config/WindowsClient/GameUserSettings.ini

I changed the top section to this:
[ScalabilityGroups]
sg.ResolutionQuality=100
sg.ViewDistanceQuality=1
sg.AntiAliasingQuality=1
sg.ShadowQuality=1
sg.GlobalIlluminationQuality=1
sg.ReflectionQuality=1
sg.PostProcessQuality=1
sg.TextureQuality=1
sg.EffectsQuality=1
sg.FoliageQuality=1
sg.ShadingQuality=1

and now it launches.

Force the game to launch with DirectX 11

By default, The Finals is set to launch with DX12. You can change that by adding “-d3d11” in the launch options.

Lower your Performance Core Ratio (Advanced Method)

This is the fix that seems to be the most effective so far. Go to this link and download the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Then try lowering your Performance Core Ratio from 55x to 54x. Basically you need to underclock your CPU, which you can do from the BIOS, as well. This fix was also suggested by a Steam user. Here is what he had to say:

Those are the only working fixes available at the moment. I am still active on the forums, and looking for more. Will update this article once I find a few solid ones.

That’s all, folks!
