Games like Starfield are best enjoyed on a controller, but since the game was released, we have been getting reports of random errors. The “controller not working” issue is one of them. We even got a similar issue when we tried out our wireless controller on Starfield for the first time. However, we fixed it by following one of the tips given below. Fix Starfield Controller not Working For PC
These are some fixes you can try to fix all the controller and joystick-related issues in Starfield.
Use Wired Controllers
Even though 2023 is a year of Wireless devices, you might not always be lucky. At least for Starfield, if you have issues with the Wireless Controller, try switching to a wired one, as this solves the controller not working issue for many players playing the game on PC. Players playing on the controller often get disconnected when using the dongle or connected to Bluetooth. So it is always better to keep a Wired Controller to avoid issues like this.
Disable the Steam Input
You can also try disabling the Steam Input if you have Starfield on Steam. It helps you load the default profiles, and if you need to know how it is done, then follow the steps below
- Open the Steam App and find Starfield from the Library.
- Right-click and select Properties, and you can find the Controller option on the left tab.
- You will find an option called the “Override for Starfield”.
- Click on “Disable Steam Input” Option.
- Relaunch the game, and Starfield should start working again.
On the other hand, if you already have it disabled. Try enabling it once, and then try playing the game with your controller. I have no idea how Steam works with controllers, but this setting is known for making or breaking controllers.
Remove other controllers from the PC
If you have multiple controllers plugged into your PC, you might face issues like these quite frequently. It is a common issue with people using multiple controllers like Steering Wheels, PlayStation Controllers, and Xbox Controllers all plugged in simultaneously.
Check if the controller is connected properly
Check if the controllers are properly connected or not. To do that, you need to do this:
- Open the Steam App and go to Settings
- Select the Controller options on the left
- Click on General Controller Settings
- It should show all the plugged-in controllers as they get automatically detected. It should look like this if your controller has been detected by Steam:
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting the controller if they are not showing up.
- Restart the PC and relaunch the game.
This is a similar issue that we faced when using our Wireless controller. But as we connected it using a Type C Cable, Starfield automatically picked it up, and we can play the game without any issues.
There is another way to check if your PC has detected your controller or not. Just type “Device Manager” on your Windows search bar and open it. Click on “Sound, video and game controllers” to open the drop-down menu. Now, check if your controller is present in the list or not. It should look something like this:
Try out a new USB Port or new controller
If none of the above methods works, you can try out a new USB Port on your PC and see if it works.
Check your controller with other games, and if it fails to work with those as well, then it might be an issue with the controller itself, and you need to change it ASAP.
