Fix Hogwarts Legacy Crashing

Hogwarts Legacy crashing – I have already covered an article on the startup issues of Hogwarts Legacy. Not it is time to talk about the crashing issues. This guide will show you what to do is Hogwarts Legacy is constantly crashing for you.

Hogwarts Legacy Crashing – How to fix

One of the most anticipated games of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy, is finally here. The game is doing extremely well, and it is easy to see, as almost all the responses that the game has gotten from the community and the reviewers are extremely positive.

But that doesn’t mean that the game is free from errors and bugs. In fact, perfect AAA releases are a thing of the past now. People who bought Hogwarts Legacy on PC are complaining that the game is constantly crashing for them. To that, here are some basic fixes you can try:

[Note: Every single fix listed here has been suggested by the dev team of Hogwarts Legacy.]

Downgrade or Upgrade your driver manually

A lot of users on Reddit are claiming that they managed to fix their crashing by just changing their driver. It doesn’t matter whether you are downgrading or upgrading. Whatever GPU driver you are using at the moment, just uninstall it, and install a driver that is newer or older.

Update 02/10/2023 – Nvidia has already released a new driver, but that is not for Hogwarts Legacy. On the other hand, AMD has not released anything.

Outdated or corrupted video and/or sound card drivers

You need to ensure you are using the most up-to-date video and sound drivers available for your system. You can just go to your respective system manufacturer’s website and download the drivers from there. If you don’t want to do that, AMD and NVIDIA also offer “automatic driver” installations if you know you have an AMD or NVIDIA card but do not know what the model is.

Are you using the latest version of DirectX

I don’t think I have to explain how important Direct X is for 3D applications. Games use DirectX to communicate with your PC, and if it is out of date, it can cause crashing and other issues with Hogwarts Legacy, as well as other games. Direct X is updated via Windows Update.

You can check for Windows Updates manually by using the steps below:

  1. Select the Start button on your PC
  2. Select SettingsUpdate & Security > Windows Update
  3. Select Check for updates.

Make sure you are not using applications to Overclock or Turbo Boost your Components

If you are running an overclocked GPU or CPU in your computer, I would strongly recommend resetting the component or components to manufacturer specifications. Doing so may prevent crashes from occurring.

One or more game files of Hogwarts Legacy might have gone corrupted

There is a huge chance that when Steam was installing Hogwarts Legacy on your system, a file or two might have gone missing or corrupted. To fix that:

  1. Go to Library in Steam
  2. Locate Hogwarts Legacy in your list of games, right-click it, and select Properties
  3. Click the Local Files tab
  4. From here, select “Verify Integrity of Game Files”

Crashing due to High Preset Settings

Hogwarts Legacy is quite a demanding title, actually. This means that the higher you set the settings, the higher will be the workload for your system’s hardware.

You shouldn’t go by the specifications listed under “Minimum”, as Minimum system requirements are a list of what base hardware the game will need to function, but typically on a reduced graphics settings profile.

Even if your system is within the minimum to recommended specifications for a game, options enabled that positively affect rendering quality can conversely and negatively affect performance and stability.

Try to set every setting to the lowest possible preset, play the game for 20-30 mins, and see if Hogwarts Legacy is crashing or not. If it doesn’t end up crashing, then you have your answer. A particular setting, when set too high, is causing the crashes.

An Application could the reason behind the crashing

People often don’t realize how many apps or services tend to run in the background of their Windows PC. And sometimes, one or two of them, end up showing incompatibility with other apps. You need to find such applications and close them. Here is how to do it:

    1. Restart your PC first.
    2. Once you are back, right-click on your Windows taskbar, and select Task Manager, to open it.
    3. Click on the Startup tab.
    4. Right-click on each item and select Disable.
    5. Now, go ahead and restart your PC.
    6. Try running Hogwarts again.
    7. If you don’t face any crashes this time, enable the startup application one at a time to determine which one is causing the problem.
    8. You will need to restart between each application you enable.

You can also try to run a “clean boot” of Windows, once. This is used just to determine if, by closing down all non-Windows specific applications and startup items, there is any change to the game’s performance or stability. After testing the game’s performance, the clean boot steps should then be reversed, and Windows should restart normally.

Official Microsoft steps on how to perform a “clean boot” are available here, but please follow those directions very closely because if done incorrectly, you can affect the system’s ability to start up.
