Dragon’s Dogma 2: Fix Crashing at Startup Issue on PC

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is finally here, and it is easily one of the biggest launches of 2024. But the game is not free from technical error. People have already started experiencing random crashes. So, in this article, we will talk about fixing the crashing issues in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

How to fix Dragon’s Dogma 2 won’t launch or Crashing at Startup

If Dragon’s Dogma 2 crashes immediately before you even make it to the main menu, here are some tips and suggestions to fix the crashing and startup issues.

Make sure that you download the Dragon’s Dogma 2 optimized GPU drivers

Updating drivers is crucial to solving a lot of crashing and startup issues.

  • Download the latest Nvidia Drivers Here
  • Download the latest AMD Drivers here
  • Download the latest Intel drivers here

Also, don’t forget to keep your Windows updated. To update Windows, all you need to do is

  1. Open Windows Search Bar
  2. Type Windows Update
  3. Open the “Windows Update Settings option”
  4. Click on Check for Updates
  5. Install any pending updates you would find.

Running the Game as Administrator might solve the issue

We would suggest that instead of launching the game via Steam, go to the installation folder of Dragon’s Dogma 2. If you can’t find the installation folder then just right-click on Dragon’s Dogma 2 from Steam > Manage > Browse Local Files. There, you will find the exe file of Dragon’s Dogma 2 called DD2. Right-click on it and select Properties. Now, go to the Compatibility Tab and check “Run this program as an administrator”. This is what it looks like:

Save the changes, and launch the game by double clicking on DD2.

[Gaming Laptop Users] Use the Dedicated GPU and not the Integrated One

If you use a Gaming Laptop, switch it automatically to the dedicated GPU when Dragon’s Dogma 2 launches. To ensure that happens, all you need to do is

  1. Open Nvidia Control Panel
  2. Click on Manage 3D Settings
  3. Select Global Settings
  4. You will find the option “Preferred Graphics Processor.” under the Settings
  5. Select “High-Performance Nvidia Processor.”

Verify Game Files and Disable Overlays

If you have the following running as an Overlay, then we recommend you turn those off

  1. Geforce Experience
  2. AMD Adrenalin
  3. Discord
  4. MSI Afterburner

I only use my MSI Afterburner when testing out games and turn it off when playing casually or online.

Also, have you tried verifying the Game files on Steam? If not, then you should do it immediately.

  1. Open your Steam Library
  2. Find Dragon’s Dogma 2.
  3. Right-click and find “Properties.”
  4. Find the option “Installed Files”
  5. Click on that and select “Verify Integrity of the Game Files.”
  6. Wait till the process is complete and relaunch the game.

Add the exe file to the Exceptions List/pause Antivirus.

We have had reports from the DD2 Forums regarding Antivirus programs deleting the DD2 Executable or .exe file, causing people to get errors when launching Dragons Dogma 2. You can add it to your Antivirus Software Exceptions list to prevent auto-deletion. You can also try pausing the Real Time Scans that run in the background, which prevents games and applications from installing or running properly.

Close any Mod Software running in the background

If you are running software like WeMod or any other cheating software in the background, make sure you uninstall them entirely before even trying to launch the Game, as new AAA games have in-built Anti-Cheat programs that detect these kinds of software that are running currently even though you are not using them.

Reinstall the Game

If nothing works, then you can try reinstalling the game. If you still face issues, sending a ticket directly to the developers is better.

QUICK TIP – If you have somehow managed to get into the game, and you find the game unplayable (FPS-wise), try setting the Graphics on the Lowest Preset and see if the performance issues persist!

So that was all about fixing the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Crashing at Startup issues. Feel free to comment if you have more suggestions; we will add them to our list of fixes.
