Fix Minecraft Legends Won’t Launch and Crashing at Startup

Minecraft Legends won’t launch and crashing – On PC, Minecraft Legends is available via Steam and the PC Game Pass. I have the game on Game Pass, and after playing it for like an hour, I can confirm that this game has some technical issues. Nothing too game-breaking, but I did face some minor errors here and there.

I saw some players complain over the Steam Discussions page of Minecraft Legends that the game won’t launch for them and is immediately crashing at startup. To be honest, these issues have become very common nowadays, and there are plenty of ways to fix them.

Fix Minecraft Legends Won’t Launch and Crashing at Startup

1. You need Windows 10 (May 2020 update or Higher) to play Minecraft Legends

If you have been trying to launch Minecraft Legends on anything other than Windows 10 or 11, then sorry to say, Minecraft Legends only supports Windows 10 or higher. In fact, you cannot start the game despite having Windows 10, if your OS version is old.

Minecraft Legends OS Requirements

Minecraft Legends requires you to have Windows 10 (May 2020 Update or higher). If you don’t know what Windows version you are on, at the moment, do this:

  1. Press the Windows key+R key on your keyboard to launch the ‘Run’ command.
  2. Now, type ‘winver’ on it, and press enter.
  3. The ‘About Windows’ window will tell you what Windows version you are using.

2. DirectX 12 is mandatory for Minecraft Legends

Minecraft Legends is one of those games that does not have support for DX11. You need to have DirectX 12 in order to start this game. In order to check the DirectX version on your system:

  1. Press Windows+R keys on your keyboard
  2. Type “dxdiag” inside the box and press Enter
  3. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool will pop up
  4. Make sure you are on the System tab, look at the bottom of the System Information list. You should see your DirectX version there.

If it is DirectX 12 then you can move further into this guide. If it is not, then you already have your answer. You can try downloading and installing the latest DirectX version from here. And see if that works out for you.

3. Downgrade or Upgrade your driver manually

It doesn’t matter whether you are downgrading or upgrading or Graphics Driver. Whatever GPU driver you are using at the moment, just uninstall it, and install a driver that is newer or older.

You can download and install the driver directly via GeForce Experience, or you can download it manually by visiting this link. For AMD users, you can go to this link.

Doing this might also fix any DirectX or Direct3D errors in Minecraft Legends.

4. Check your antivirus settings

Some antivirus programs may prevent Minecraft Legends from starting or might immediately cause it to crash. Check your antivirus settings to make sure the game is not being blocked. Add Minecraft Legends to any whitelist feature in your antivirus program.

5. Make sure you are logged-in in the Minecraft Launcher and your Microsoft Store with the same Email ID

You have to make sure that you are using the same ID to login to the Minecraft Launcher, the Xbox app, and the Microsoft store. You cannot use separate IDs. If that doesn’t work, try making a Mojang account and login using that.

Minecraft Launcher Issue

6. Launch the game directly instead of using the Launcher

If you have to game on Xbox app, then you will notice that Minecraft Legends came with a Launcher. Now you can either launch the game from the launcher or you can launch the game directly from your Xbox app library. Try avoiding the launcher and launch the game directly.

7. Repair Minecraft Legends to fix crashes (For Xbox app users)

If you are playing Minecraft Legends on the Xbox app on your Windows 11 or 10 PC, then you can actually repair the game. This will fix the game if there are any sorts of missing or broken files. Here is how to do it:

How to repair Minecraft Legends Files on Windows

  1. Open your Xbox app
  2. Click on ‘My Library’
  3. Click on ‘Manage Installs’, located in the top-right corner
  4. Select the ‘Manage’ button beside Minecraft Legends
  5. Now click on the ‘Files’ tab
  6. Select ‘Verify and Repair’

As soon as you do so, the verification process will start, and the Xbox app will try to re-download any corrupted or missing game files.

Most of you should already know about the verification process on Steam. So I am not explaining it separately. If you don’t know how it works, comment down below, and I will post it for you.

8. Xbox app users, make sure you are using your Administrator Account

Log in to Windows 10 with a local Administrator Account. This fixes the majority of cases reported.

9. Gaming Laptop users, check whether you are using your Dedicated GPU

Most gaming laptops these days come with two graphics devices:

  • An onboard (or “integrated”) graphics processor.
  • A more powerful, dedicated video card.

If you are an Nvidia user:

  1. Launch Nvidia Control Panel
  2. Click on Manage 3D settings located on the left side
  3. Click on the Program Settings tab
  4. Under “Select a program to customize” select Minecraft Legends
  5. If it is not there, then click on Add and then select it
  6. Now set “Select the preferred graphics processor for this program” to “High-performance NVIDIA processor”

If your laptop has an AMD GPU, then here is what you need to:

  1. Open your AMD Control Panel.
  2. Go to Graphics and then PowerPlay.
  3. Set the Plugged In and Battery options to Maximum Performance.
  4. Click Apply.
  5. Next, go to Graphics and then 3D.
  6. Move the Performance slider until it is set for Optimal Performance.
  7. Click Apply.
  8. If you have a Switchable Graphics tab, click it, locate Minecraft Legends in the list, and set it for High Performance.
  9. Click Apply.

10. Make sure Microsoft Gaming Services is updated on your PC

Check for updates to the Microsoft Gaming Services in the Downloads section of the Microsoft Store.
