How to Lockpick in Starfield

Now, talking about RPGs, one of the most common mechanics is Lockpicking, with each game having its unique take. In Bethesda’s Starfield, a special consumable which is quite like a traditional lockpick, called ‘Digipicks’, will have to be used by players. Players will also need to solve a puzzle containing more complex locks, requiring more brainpower to pick.

Relatively early in the game, Starfield players learn how to pick locks in the main story while investigating the pirate base on Kreet. We advise you not to be impatient and skip the single-screen lockpicking tutorial; even so, this tutorial might not be sufficient for a few.

Lockpicking in Starfield

In Starfield, Locks are made of layers of circular security, which have more complex locks with additional security layers. Each of these layers will have gaps in it, and the players will be required to fill these gaps with the help of the keys provided by their Digipick. After all the gaps are filled in the outermost layer, players will move to the next one, meaning they need to be smart regarding the order of their key’s usage. If they upgrade their Security skill, they can see which keys fit which layers, making this process easier.

With this, the quickest way players can pick a lock in the game is by using the shoulder buttons to cycle through all available keys until they find one that fills all the gaps in the layer. Moreover, we suggest that players try to slot keys with more pins first since they may only fit in a single position. With the help of the analog stick or D-Pad, players can rotate each of the keys, and they should continue to do so until they can line up with the gaps of the outermost layer, all of its pins. However, in the case of more complex locks, we recommend that players line up all the keys required to finish a layer before they slot them.

After the keys are positioned, players need to press the A button to slot it, and only after that, they move to the next key. Thereafter, it is just the process that must be repeated until all security layers are unlocked. Remember that a few specific keys will only work on certain layers, so they must be careful of the order in which they are used. If a Digipick does not line up correctly with the outermost layer, it is best that they move on to the next one and later return to it.

Note that in the game, players will be required to unlock and upgrade the Security skill (these can be found in the Tech skill tree) to be able to pick the Advanced, Expert and Master locks.

How to get Digipicks in Starfield

Getting more Digipicks in Starfield

In Starfield, players can find Digipicks in various locations, which is great given their importance. They can also be looted from dead bodies or pickpocketed from living ones, given that they have unlocked the skill of Theft. By cycling to the misc section of their inventories, players can also buy Digipicks from most general-purpose merchants. The price for this is 35 Credits, although by unlocking and upgrading the Commerce skill, they can be obtained for much cheaper rates.

That pretty much sums up all that there is to know about how to Lockpick in Starfield.
