Aliens Fireteam Elite is crashing at startup | How to fix

Aliens Fireteam Elite crashing – This guide will show you how to deal with the PC version of Aliens Fireteam Elite, constantly crashing for Steam users.

How to fix the Crashing issues in Aliens Fireteam Elite PC

Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a third-person shooter developed by Cold Iron Studio. If you have played Alien Isolation before this, and expecting something similar. Then let me tell  you, Fireteam Elite is a completely standalone AAA title that focuses on the Action genre, and a direct sequel to the original Alien games. The game is a multiplayer third-person co-op shooter, and you can either choose to play it with your friends, or AI teammates. Local co-op is not available, though online matchmaking can be public or private.

Aliens Fireteam Elite features five character classes:

  • Gunner
  • Demolisher
  • Technician
  • Doc
  • Recon

Players will get access to a total of four story campaigns. And each story campaign consists of 3 missions. You will find twenty different types of enemies in the game, and weapon customization and character progression are also present.

But like every AAA title that has launched in the past few years, Aliens Fireteam Elite also has its own set of issues. A lot of posts have started popping up on the Steam discussions page of the game, Reddit and other forums. And most of these posts are pointing towards a common issue at the moment. It looks like Aliens Fireteam Elite is crashing for a lot of PC users. Yes, I am even seeing players with flagship GPUs talk about this. This proves that this is definitely something that is not related to hardware.

I have personally played the game on my system, consisting of a 5600x and RTX 2060, but I didn’t witness any crashing or freezing during my playthrough. With that being said, here are some steps you can follow to fix the crashes.

How to fix the crashing

I understand that crashes could be triggered by completely random factors. Still, there are some basic steps you can try to fix the issues.

Set you Video Settings to the lowest possible

It is impossible for me to know what GPU you are trying to play this game on. There is a huge possibility that the graphics card you are using, is not capable of handling the game on high settings. So start by setting them to low, play for a while, and if everything goes fine, start increasing them slowly. The process might be a bit time-consuming, but is definitely effective.

Nvidia GPU driver for Aliens Fireteam Elite

At the time of me writing this article, there is no exclusive Nvidia Game Ready driver available for Aliens Fireteam Elite. I will update this article as soon as Nvidia releases any driver.

Of course, if you are sitting on old drivers. I would advise that you update to the latest one, until the exclusive driver arrives. You can either update it directly via Geforce Experience, you can go to this link, fill in the details, and the latest driver should become available for download.

AMD Adrenaline driver for Aliens Fireteam Elite

Crashes caused by Steam or GFE Overlay

Just turn off the in game overlay in Geforce Experience. I don’t know why, but it causes crashes on startup for some Nvidia users. Many AAA titles have had this issue recently.

It is quite an easy fix if you ask me. All you have to do is turn off the in-game overlay feature of the GeForce Experience application.

  1. Just launch GFE
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Turn off “IN-GAME OVERLAY”

Apparently, the Steam overlay is also causing the Aliens Fireteam Elite to crash for many users, so turning that off could solve the issue as well.

Overclocking software

Overclocking your GPU or CPU using certain applications could also lead to crashes. A lot of games have been suffering from crashes lately due to applications like MSI Afterburner. So it is best to stay on the safe side and run your graphics card on default speeds.

Re-install the game in a different location

And finally, re-install the game in the different location if nothing else works. This should be the last thing that you try.

Note: These are all basic tips and won’t require you to do anything advanced. I believe if someone has already decided to go for a refund. He/She might as well try to fix it first. Since, it hasn’t been long since the game launched, the “very specific” fixes haven’t surfaced yet. I am constantly checking all the forums. And as soon as something comes up that is guaranteed to fix these issues, I will post it here.

I would suggest that you take a look at the official Steam Discussions page of Aliens Fireteam Elite. You will find a lot of players discussing these exact same issues.
