The Medium – How to Fix Lag, Stuttering and Low FPS Issues

The Medium Lag Stuttering Low FPS – The PC version of The Medium has issues like lag, fps drops, stuttering, and various other errors. This guide consists of a list of some of those errors and how to fix them.

Lag, Stuttering and Low FPS problems in the PC version of The Medium. How to fix?

The Medium is a third-person psychological horror video game developed by Bloober TeamPlayers control Marianne, a medium who has the ability to travel into the spirit realm. And this ability allows her to inhabit both worlds for puzzle solving. Her psychic abilities may also be used against hostile forces and are recharged by interacting with energy spots called spirit wells.

The game has got some decent reviews so far and. In fact, people who are not that much into horror games, are quite enjoying this one as well. But that doesn’t mean that The Medium is perfect. There are some technical issues with the game that still need to be taken care of. A lot of players have already started complaining about problems like lag, low fps, stuttering, etc.

Lag fix

Lag has become a really common problem in games nowadays. The Medium has a similar problem. Here are the things you can do to fix it.

Do you know what are the system requirements for The Medium? Here they are. *Spoiler alert* They are extremely high. But it makes sense, as most of the time your graphics card would be rendering two scenes at the same time.

Now, start by setting the Graphics options or settings to the lowest quality possible. Then start cranking up each setting one by one, keeping an eye on the frame rates at the same time. This way you would be able to see which graphics setting is causing the biggest dent on the FPS. If you are having trouble figuring out the perfect combination of settings and I will recommend that you check our guide to The Medium Graphics Settings.

Third-party programs running in the background can interfere with our games. Close all other applications to resolve software conflicts and free up resources. Now that you have closed the unnecessary programs. Follow the steps below:
  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager.
  2. Click More Details.
  3. Select the Startup tab.
  4. Right-click on each item and select Disable.
  5. Restart the computer.

If this resolves the issue, enable the startup application one at a time to determine which one is causing the problem. You will need to restart between each application you enable.

Did I mention that you have to update your Graphics drivers? Here is the link to the Nvidia Driver v461.40. This driver specifically provides support for The Medium. Radeon users on the other hand can go to this link to find out the latest driver that is best suited for their graphics card.

Stuttering fix

The Medium is stuttering a lot for some players. There are certain things you can to fix it actually.

Close all the different overlays that you have enabled on your system. That include Steam, Discord, Nvidia GFE, AMD. Overlays are known to cause stutters in many games. So try to avoid them if your system is not high-powered.

The Captures tool on Windows 10 often tend to take up a lot of resources and the Background Recording feature always records in the background while you are playing any game. So turn it off would immediately give you a boost. Here is how to do it:

  1. Open Windows Settings
  2. Click on Gaming
  3. Select Captures
  4. Turn off Background Recording

If you are a gaming laptop user and your laptop features an Nvidia graphics card inside then you need to make sure your laptop is using that instead of the low powered integrated one.

  1. Just open Nvidia Control Panel
  2. Click on Manage 3D settings located on the left side
  3. Select the Program Settings tab
  4. Under “Select a program to customize” select The Medium
  5. If it is not there then click on Add and then select it
  6. Now set “Select the preferred graphics processor for this program” to “High-performance NVIDIA processor

Set you Power Management settings to High Performance. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Press Windows+R
  2. Type powercfg.cpl into the Run prompt, then press Enter
  3. Expand the Show additional plans collapsible and select High performance
  4. If no High performance plan is available, click the Create a Power Plan button on the left
  5. Select High performance, name your plan, and click Next
  6. Set both of the drop downs in this menu to Never, then click Create

FPS drops fix

The problem of low fps or fps drops is also something that some players are experiencing. Try the following methods to fix the situation.

Actually, you can try every step written on the ‘Lag fix’ and ‘Stuttering fix’ section here as well. Lag and FPS Drops are more or less the same thing.

Start by tweaking the settings of yours Video Control Panel to make the performance of the game better. Nvidia users, open Nvidia Control Panel, select “Manage 3D settings” from the left bar and click on the Program Settings tab. Locate The Medium from the drop down menu under “Select a program to customize”.

For some reason if you don’t see the game on the list then click on the Add button and another list will appear, showing all the “Recently Used” applications. Pick The Medium and now tweak the following settings:
Image Sharpening : Off
Threaded Optimization : On
Power Management : Prefer Maximum Performance
Low Latency Mode : Off
Vertical sync : Off
Texture filtering – Quality : Performance

AMD users can also do something similar on their control panels. Disable Radeon Anti-Lag, Boost, Anisotropic Filtering and Frame Rate Target Control. Turn off Image Sharpening, Morphological Filtering, V-sync, Maximum Tesselation Level, OpenGL Triple Buffering and Radeon Chill. Set Tesselation Mode and Shader Cache to “AMD Optimized” and Anti-Aliasing Mode and Anti-aliasing Method to “Use Application settings” and “Multi-sampling” respectively. Set Texture Filtering Quality to “Performance” and GPU Workload “Graphics”. Finally, just enable Surface Format Optimization.

Note : These are all basic fixes and figuring out guaranteed solutions for particular issues require extremely thorough testing. I will be updating this article with more.

I would suggest that you take a look at the official Steam Discussions page of The Medium. You will find a lot of players discussing these exact same issues.
