Star Wars Squadrons – Refresh Rate Bug – Is there a fix?

What is the Refresh Rate Bug all about?

Star Wars Squadrons has finally made its way across all platforms, and lets just say the release is not as smooth as we expected it to be. People are experiencing a lot of bugs and performance issues. It is true that not all the bugs that have surfaced so far are game breaking, but the one we are talking about here surely is.

It looks like players are witnessing a bug where Star Wars Squadrons is behaving oddly on monitors with 144hz or higher refresh rates. Players are claiming that despite running the game on 144+ FPS, it feels like that the frame rates are stuck at 60 FPS. And they couldn’t find a way to remove this 60 FPS cap. Here is what some EA Forums users have to say regarding this:

  • This is unplayable until this is fixed. I have seen multiple people on reddit and discord that also have this problem. The refresh rates above 60hz are broken, it makes the game super choppy. I am playing on 144hz and the whole game is skipping when I turn even though I am running at 300fps.
  • There is a major optimization problem with the game. Playing at above 60 FPS+ there is frame skipping, the FPS for me is 144hz but it is far from what 144hz should look like. It’s so bad that I have to use 60 FPS to reduce it and at that it’s still there, it makes 144hz look like 30hz. I went back to Star Wars Battlefront 2 to make sure the old engine was right and I played a starfighter game and it looks perfect, so I hope this can be fixed quickly because it’s a real problem and everyone should be having this issue.

I can only imagine how frustrating this is, as players who have built a habit of playing games at 100+fps at 144hz+ refresh rate, might face tremendous difficulties at downgrading to 60 FPS. So is there a fix?

Is there a fix?

Unfortunately, there isn’t any particular fix to this issue. It looks like, the devs have hard locked the game at 60 FPS. And they incorporated something in the game that is hiding it.

One user though has claimed that he managed to fix this issue, over the forums. Here is what he has to say:

Yup. I got a little fix going.

In game, I set it to 144hz and V-Sync to on.

Then I had to go into the config file, and I enabled DX12 and turned off motion blur.

Also hard set the game to 144 FPS using the NVIDIA control panel.

Game feels a bit better now after that.

Now, I don’t know how well this fix works. Because I haven’t tried it, and I have no plans of trying it. Because till now, every time I have tried to play Squadrons, I ended up feeling dizzy due to the mouse controls and the choppy fps. If the fix doesn’t end up working for you, then you have no other choice but to wait for the developers to fix this. But considering this is EA, I wouldn’t recommend counting on that too much.
