Star Wars Squadrons – Game is Crashing – How to fix

It looks like a lot of players are facing constant crashes while playing the PC version of Star Wars Squadrons. While you wait for the developers to address this, here are some basic fixes that you can try:

Star Wars Squadrons – Game is Crashing – How to fix

PC System requirements of Star Wars Squadrons

Before you move further into this guide, make sure that the specifications of your PC are somewhat identical to the minimum requirements of the game at least, if not the recommended. Just so you know, the hardware mentioned under minimum requirements will only allow you to play the game at 25-30 FPS.

MINIMUM RECOMMENDED
OS 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10
Processor (AMD) Ryzen 3 1300X or Equivalent Ryzen 7 2700X or Equivalent
Processor (Intel) i5 6600k or Equivalent i7-7700 or Equivalent
Memory 8 GB 16 GB
Graphics card (AMD) Radeon HD 7850 or Equivalent Radeon RX 480 (Non-VR/Minimum VR) or Radeon RX 570 (Recommended VR) or Equivalent
Graphics card (NVIDIA) GeForce GTX 660 or Equivalent GeForce GTX 1060(Non-VR/Minimum VR) or GeForce GTX 1070 (Recommended VR) or Equivalent
DirectX 11.1 Compatible video card or equivalent 11.1 Compatible video card or equivalent
Online Connection Requirements Broadband Connection Broadband Connection
Hard-drive space 40 GB 40 GB

As you can see, you need a Ryzen 7 2700X or an i7-7770 paired with a RX 570 or a GTX 1060 to play this game smoothly on 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second. You also need a whopping 16 GB of RAM with that. I can already see majority of the gaming laptops struggling to run this game at playable fps as most of them come with 8 GB of RAM. The ones that come with 16 GB of Memory installed are extremely costly.

File Verification Method

Every launcher nowadays offers ways to verify the game files of the games, which would repair the corrupted files that might be causing issues. Now the feature works in different ways in different launchers. Uninstall the Windows 10 August update

Apprently, a lot of users started facing crashes after installing the August Update for Windows 10. This is happening to those who have installed the cumulative updates KB4566782 and KB4565351. In order to check whether you have these updates installed or not:

[Note : Avoid this step if your OS is running the latest update. Because Microsoft has already released an update to fix all the issues. If you do not have pending updates, it means you are running the latest build.]

  1. Open Windows Settings
  2. Click on Update & Security
  3. Now select Windows Update from the left side
  4. Scroll down and click on “View update history”
  5. Look under “Quality Updates”
  6. If you see one of the updates mentioned above on the list, you need to uninstall that
  7. Click on Uninstall updates, available on same window
  8. Find the update from the list
  9. Right click on it and select Uninstall
  10. Restart your PC after the process is completed

Terminate overclocking or recording utilities

The crashes in Star Wars Squadrons might be due to an overclocking or recording application running in the background. Close any kind of recording or overclocking utility that is running on your PC. Overclocking applications like the RivaTuner or MSI Afterburner, are causing crashes for a lot of games. I am not sure if Star Wars Squadrons is one of them or not, but why take the chance. Nowadays, even the slightest change in the base memory clock or core clock via an overclocking application is causing a lot of games to crash.

Upgrade to the latest .NET Framework version

Microsoft released a .NET Framework update for the Windows 10 users. The update is called:

  • 2020-09 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64 (KB4576478)

Here is how to install the update:

  • Go to Settings
  • Go to Update & Security
  • Click on Check for updates
  • Check the name of the update and install it
  • Restart your PC

EA Desktop users switch back to Origin

EA Desktop made its debut just a while ago. It is here to completely replace Origin, but not immediately. EA Desktop still has a lot of issues. A lot of games aren’t even compatible with this new launcher.

So it is best to switch back to Origin for the time being. It is true that Origin is lacking a lot features, but you cannot deny the fact that it is way more stable than EA Desktop.

Re-install Squadrons (Only if nothing else works)

If none of the fixes mentioned above work for you then is your last resort. Game installations go wrong all the time. A file might have gone corrupted during the installation process. And that might be the reason why the game is crashing for you. So do a fresh installation of the game once.

Before you go for the re-installation, make sure you empty your “Temp” folder.

  • Go to the Start menu on your Desktop.
  • Press the Windows key+R at the same time.
  • Type in %TEMP% and press Enter.
  • Select All (Edit > Select All or Ctrl+A).
  • Click the Delete key.

Wait for Performance patches from MOTIVE

Star Wars Squadrons is a brand new title and is completely online. So bugs are glitches are understandable at the moment. MOTIVE is a pretty small studio and doesn’t have a lot of developers working under. So be patient and give them some time. I am pretty sure that they will be releasing a patch to fix the crashing issues pretty soon.

These are all the fixes we have at the moment for people for whom Star Wars Squadrons is crashing. We will be adding more soon. Until then, check out what people are up to over the forums. Links are below.
