Resident Evil Village ray tracing not working – Is the Ray Tracing option in the settings menu greyed out or not working for you in Resident Evil Village? Don’t worry, here is a fix
Resident Evil Village (RE8) – Ray Tracing option not working – How to fix
Capcom has been quite vocal about Ray Tracing in Resident Evil Village since the announcement of the game. They have been telling from the very beginning how the Ray Tracing feature would make the game look completely different. I donโt necessarily agree to that though. I have played the game with Ray Tracing and Reflections enabled, and I didnโt find anything phenomenal. To each, their own I guess.
Anyway, a lot of players who bought Resident Evil Village are complaining that the Ray Tracing option is not working for them. It is completely greyed out. Now, it makes sense for users who do not have RTX cards. But even users with RTX 3080s and 3090s are experiencing this issue.
Here is a post from Steam user /doom972 on the discussions page of RE8:
Ray tracing not available on an RTX 2080 Super?I have an RTX 2080 Super, but the ray tracing option is grayed out, and if I click on it, it says that ray tracing is not available for my current configuration. I have the latest Nvidia drivers. Is this a bug, or is this by design due to AMD exclusivity? I found articles mentioning AMD exclusivity for ray tracing, but others saying that ray tracing will be available on both brands.
I can’t use raytracing (RTX 3080)I just can’t set on the option. It says, “you can’t use it with your currenty hardware settings”.
How to fix
The fix is easier than you think. I have picked it up from a Reddit post, and this fix has been confirmed to be working by many users.
You can fix this issue easily by installing the Windows 10 Oct 20 Update as Resident Evil Village uses the new DX12 RT, and therefore the Oct 20 patch is a must. Also, update your graphics drivers while you are at it. If you haven’t done it yet obviously. So if you have halted Windows automatic updates, then I would suggest that you enable it once and install all the pending updates.
Once your update is done, the Ray Tracing option should become available for you. I am using Windows 10 64-bit Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.928), and the Ray Tracing option is available on my RTX 3070, as well as on my RTX 2060.
