Discord could be a reason
Baldur’s Gate is an always-online title. So it is pretty obvious that people would be playing the game with their friends. And discord is mandatory now for multiplayer games. But there is a problem. Discord has become really resource hungry lately. So, it is recommended that you make few tweaks in order to stop Discord from reducing the performance of your system. Here is what you need to do:
- Launch Discord
- Go to User Settings
- Click on Voice & Video from the left sidebar
- Scroll down to Advanced section
- Disable โOpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco System, Inc.โ
- Disable โEnable Quality of Service High Packet Priorityโ
- Click on Overlay from the sidebar

Try Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
If you have the latest build of Windows 10 (2004) then you should make use of the brand new feature called hardware-accelerated gpu scheduling. If you have a decent graphics card then you might actually benefit from this. Here is how to turn it on:
- Go to Windows 10 settings
- Click on System
- Select the Display tab on the left
- Scroll down and you will notice an option called Graphics Settings at the bottom
- Click on it
- Turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling
- Restart your PC
Turn off Windows Background Recording
If you have Background Recording on on your Windows then it can cause FPS drops or Lag. Basically the feature constantly records in the background when you are playing a game. Here is how to disable Windows Background Recording:
- Open Windows Settings
- Click on Gaming
- Select Captures
- Now turn off Background Recording
Disable Game Mode
Game Mode is another feature that got introduced in Windows 10 but it is a complete hit or miss. In some games this features helps while it causes performance issues in some. So it is better to turn it off. Here is how to disable game mode:
- Open Windows 10 Settings menu
- Click on Gaming
- Select Game Mode from the left sidebar
- Turn it off
- Restart your game launcher
Disable Xbox Game Bar
It has been a while since Microsoft introduced the Xbox Game Bar feature on Windows 10. Sadly it still causes fps drops in some games. I am not sure if your lag in Baldur’s Gate 3 has anything to do with the game bar or not, but it is better to keep it off. Here is how to do it:
- Open Windows 10 Settings menu
- Click on Gaming
- Select Xbox Game Bar from the left sidebar
- Turn it off
- Restart your game launcher
Disable Microsoft SPPSVC (Advanced Method)
Note : This is an advanced method as it involves making changes to the Windows Registry. Do not try this unless you have proper knowledge.
A lot of Windows 10 users are complaining recently that a service called Microsoft Software Protection Platform Service or (sppsvc.exe) eating a lot of CPU and Memory. As a result they are facing stuttering issues an FPS drops in games.
So just open your Windows Task Manager and try to observe whether a process called Microsoft Software Protection Platform Service is appearing on the list or not. If it is then you need to temporarily pause it in order to prevent Baldur’s Gate 3 from lagging. Simply clicking โEnd Taskโ on the process will do nothing as the process will be back again in few seconds. So here is what you need to do:
How to disable SPPSVC
- Press Windows key+R on your keyboard
- Type โregeditโ and press enter to bring up the Windows Registry Editor
- Now go to this location : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sppsvc
- On the right-side you will notice some options
- Double-click on Start and change its value to from 2 to 4
- Restart your PC
This will disable Microsoft Software Protection Platform Service but your wonโt able to use other Microsoft Windows applications like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, etc. Also, you will get a message showing your windows is not activated on your desktop. When you are done playing the game, just change the value of Start back to 2. Everything will go back to normal.
One thing you have to keep in mind, Baldurโs Gate 3 is a brand new game, and is still in Early Access. So expect a ton of patches and updates.
I often see a lot of people buy Early Access titles, without knowing what Early Access actually means. When you buy a EA title, you are actually getting involved with the title as it develops. Early Access games are not complete games, and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play Baldurโs Gate 3 in its current state, then you should get a refund and wait to see if the game progresses further in development.
These are all the fixes we have as of now, for the lag issues in Baldurโs Gate 3. Donโt worry, we will be adding more.
If you think this guide had helped you then let us know in the comment section below. Also, if you are facing problems that are not mentioned on this article then also you can comment below. We will try come out with a fix. Good luck!
Thatโs all folks!
