How to Counter Genji in Overwatch 2

Genji Counter Overwatch 2 – Genji is a ninja-cyborg damage-class hero in Overwatch 2. Genji specializes in close-ranged combats, but has a few tricks up his sleeve to dodge long-range combats.

This hero has been carried over from the original overwatch, and hence not really new to the game, additionally, a lot of players prefer to play Genji, so you’ll come across one every once in a while.

Genji’s abilities are such that they deal heavy damage at close range. To top it off, the hero also has insane movement and bullet-dodging abilities.

The only problem Genji faces is distant combat, of course, a good Genji player would avoid it at all costs, but there are always some situations in which the hero would have to be distant for a bit.

In this article by Frondtech, we’ll cover how you can counter the hero Genji in Overwatch 2. Here it is:

Before we get into it, here’s a quick review of Genji’s abilities which we’ll need to counter:

  • Shuriken: Genji has ninja-blades as his Primary weapon, these will be thrown in bursts of three, the damage output on these, isn’t really high, but it’s good enough to get things done.
  • Deflect: Genji can also deflect incoming bullets with his sword, that’ll change the direction of the incoming bullets and if you’re standing in the way, you’d basically eliminate yourself with your own bullets.
  • Cyber Agility: Genji has exceptional agility in the field. The hero can climb on walls and double jump, which makes getting closer to his enemies much more effortless.
  • Swift Strike: On activation of the swift strike, Genji will rapidly Dash forward and inflict damage on the enemy, if this eliminates the enemy, the cooldown timer resets instantly, and you’ll be able to do it once again.
  • Dragon Blade: Basically, Genji’s sword.

How to Counter Genji in Overwatch 2

Now that we know what kind of tricks Genji has up his sleeve, we’ll be looking for a suitable counter for the same.

There are actually a bunch of heroes that could counter Genji in Overwatch, Namely Sombra, Zarya, Winston, Mei, and finally Lucio. These are some of the best fits as to Genji’s counters, more on them below:

Winston

Winston belongs to the tank category in Overwatch 2. What makes this tank hero special, is the high health points. The hero can take a lot of damage before returning to safety.

Moreover, this hero has good movement abilities, these abilities would make countering Genji a bit easier as he’s primarily dependent on his ability to get closer to enemies quickly and engage in battles in proximity.

Winston also has the tesla cannon, Genji’s ability to deflect bullets will not work here, so the fact here is that Genji cannot go head-to-head against Winston, due to him not being able to deflect bullets as well as the high health points.

Zarya

Zarya is another awesome counter for Genji, due to her weapon shooting ‘beam’ and not bullets. The Genji won’t have anything to block.

Also, if a Genji tries to overwhelm a Zarya using his barrage of Shurikens, Zarya can easily pop her Particle Barrier ability and absorb everything.

Lucio

Tired of Genji $h|tt|ng on your Ana. In that case, Lucio is one of the best counters to Genji in the game, his soundwave ability can push enemies back.

Given that Genji has to get close to enemies in order to engage in combat, constant use of the soundwave ability would render Genji useless, as the hero cannot engage in any fights anymore.

Another one of Lucio’s abilities is the Sound Wave, in which he gains some extra health points himself, and so do all the allies that are in proximity.

Pairing up these abilities would land a devastating blow to the enemy team, not just Genji.

Sombra

Among the three categories of heroes, in overwatch 2, Sombra belongs to the “damage” class. The best ability that Sombra has, is the “hack” ability, which renders all the opponent’s abilities unusable for a while.

It makes most of the heroes walking targets, that is, if they do not have a very effective primary weapon.

Additionally, the enemies that are “hacked” by her are vulnerable to her attacks. You could maybe pair up Sombra’s hack ability with some other hero’s high-damage ability. That’ll surely leave a mark on the enemy team.

Mei

Mei is a damage-class hero, one of her abilities is to slow enemies down as well as freeze them.

Genji doesn’t really have high health points, so freezing him and targeting him would definitely be shooting fish in a barrel.

Mei, with her freezing ability, could slow Genji down, and without the movement speed, it’s basically game over for Genji.

That’s everything we had on Genji’s counters. Just make sure you pick one of these heroes if you’ve got a Genji in your opponent, and you’ll be good to go. See you all in the next one!
