Overwatch 2 Slow Download Speed issue – How to fix

Overwatch 2 is finally out, and just like Overwatch 1, this game has also managed to garner millions of players right from the launch day. Just like Overwatch 1, Overwatch 2 is extremely engaging, and every player can pick up the pace irrespective of their play style. And if everything goes according to plan, this title might completely replace the OG Overwatch in the minds of the fans.

But we cannot deny the fact that despite being a wonderful game, Overwatch 2 has its fair share of problems. Players have been experiencing innumerable amount of bugs, glitches, server issues, errors, and performance issues since the release. This, shouldn’t be a surprise, as most of you probably know how always online titles are nowadays.

The issue we are talking about here is the extremely slow download speeds while downloading or updating Overwatch 2. This is actually a huge problem because just like the original Overwatch, Overwatch 2 is a pretty big game as well.

The game is already around 50 GB in size, and we all know how frequently Blizzard releases Overwatch updates. Imagine downloading all those updates with your download speed stuck at 1-2 MB/s.

How to fix the slow download speed

The funny part is, you will see plenty of fixes for this bug or issue on the internet. But trust me, none of them work. By trying those fixes you will be just wasting your time and nothing else. Let’s see how to fix this issue. But first, just visit Speedtest once and do a quick speed test to make sure that there is no issue from your side, and that you are getting full download speed.

Sorry to say, but there is no “free fix” for this issue. And I am telling this because I was struggling with the exact same issue. I have a 300 MB/s Fiber connection where I get a download speed of 35-40 MBPS almost everywhere.

But on the Battle.net app, I was getting a download speed of only 1-1.5 MBPS while downloading Overwatch 2. And it is very frustrating as you have to sit for hours before you can even start the game.

That is when I decided to try out a VPN. I already had a year-long subscription to a VPN called Private Internet Access. So all I did was:

  1. Installed Private Internet Access
  2. Set VPN Server to US New York City
  3. Restarted the Battle.net application
  4. Restarted the download

My download speed went from 1-1.5 MBPS to 20-22 MBPS. Check it out:

Yes, I know that it is not 40 MBPS, but it is way better than waiting countless hours for a single update to download.

This issue is not only exclusive to the Battle.net app, but it is a problem on Steam as well. Without turning on VPN, I get horrible download speeds while updating or downloading CS GO or Destiny 2 updates.

The slow download speed is not an issue from the side of your connection. It is a server-related issue that can only be fixed by Blizzard. I have tried downloading other games from Battle.net as well and every time I got my full download speed.

You can use any good VPN for this, actually. You have to just make sure that the VPN you are choosing doesn’t have data limits.
