Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Dark Alliance – Crashing at startup – Game won’t launch – How to fix

D&D Dark Alliance crashing and won’t launch – Is DnD Dark Alliance crashing or won’t launch for you on Steam? Here are some troubleshooting methods you can try to potentially fix your issues.

D&D Dark Alliance is crashing and won’t launch for PC users

Dark Alliance, not to be confused with Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, is definitely something that RPG lovers had their eyes on ever since it was announced. If you are someone who has played the old D&D titles, and thinks that this one also has the same formula, I have to say that this is probably not for you. But if you want to have an open mind about the whole scenario, then you should definitely try Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance.

But since you are already reading this article. I am guessing that you have already tried the game, and you have come here because D&D Dark Alliance is either crashing on your PC, or it won’t launch for you. Don’t worry, you are not alone.

Let me start by saying that this game has a lot of issues. At the time of me writing this article, Dark Alliance is crawling with bugs and glitches. Random errors popping up for people sporadically. Go to YouTube, pick a review video of this game, and you will most likely find the reviewer talking about bugs and errors in this game.

If you ask me, I would say that these issues are quite common in online games nowadays. After sinking in 150 hours in a game like Outriders, I have learned to look at these things differently. Trust me, these games are nothing compared to the traumatic experience I faced while troubleshooting Outriders.

Back to the point, let’s look at some steps you can follow to fix the crashes and launch issues in Dungeons & Dragons Dark Alliance.

Note: The store page of D&D Dark Alliance doesn’t have anything mentioned regarding the OS requirements for the game. So I am guessing that this game would launch on all versions of Windows. Not limited to only Windows 10 64-bit.

Nvidia Driver for D&D Dark Alliance

At the time of me writing this article, Nvidia has not released any Game Ready driver that is optimized for D&D Dark Alliance. I will update this article with the correct version of the driver once it is up. In the meantime, you can just update your current driver if you haven’t in a while. Keep them updated, because that way you would be able to avoid any sort of Direct3D or DirectX errors. Avoid this for now if you already have the latest driver. Which is version 466.77.

AMD Driver for D&D Dark Alliance

AMD on the other hand, has released a driver optimized for Dark Alliance. The version is called Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.6.1. The release notes has it mentioned.

AMD GPU users, please use this link to check whether you are up-to-date with your drivers.

Disable Anti-virus or add D&D Dark Alliance on the Exception list

Either try disabling your Anti-Virus software temporarily and then run Dark Alliance, or add exceptions for DnD Dark Alliance in your Anti-virus configuration.

Why should you do this? Well, some anti-virus software hook very deep into user systems and can affect disk and network operations, which can cause crashes in games. Some games also use copy protection technology that can appear as malicious software to an AV scanner, resulting in potential false-positive alerts.

Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable

If you are getting errors like “vcruntime140_1.dll missing” or “MSVCP140.dll was not found”. The go ahead and install the latest version of Visual C++ redistributable, as there’s a chance it hasn’t been installed correctly.

Extras

Here are some extra things you can do just to be sure:

  • Terminate overclocking applications, and run your GPU and CPU at stock speeds
  • Disable Steam overlay or other overlays
  • Run the .exe file of Dark Alliance as admin directly from the installation folder instead of launching the game via Steam
  • Verify the files (Probably won’t do anything. Nothing wrong in trying though)
  • Re-install (The last thing you should try)

I do not have any more methods at the moment. But I am constantly keeping an eye on the Forums, looking for new fixes. If you want, you can check out the D&D Dark Alliance Discussions page on Steam. The posts there will give you a good idea about the situation.
