Call of Duty (COD) Black Ops Cold War – Slow download speed – How to fix

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War is finally out, and just like the previous COD titles, this game has also managed to garner millions of players right from the launch day. Just like Modern Warfare 2019,  COD BO Cold War is extremely engaging and every player can pick up pace irrespective of their playstyle. And if everything goes according to plan, this title might completely replace Modern Warfare 2019. Obviously, Warzone players don’t have to worry because Cold War doesn’t have any separate Battle Royale mode.

But we cannot deny the fact that despite being a really good game, Black Ops Cold War has it’s fair share of problems. Players have been experiencing innumerable amount of bugs, glitches, errors and performance issues since the launch. Which, shouldn’t be a surprise, as most of you probably know how COD titles are during the first few weeks after launch.

The issue we are talking about here is the extremely slow download speeds while downloading or updating Call of Duty BOCW. This is actually a huge problem because just like COD MW and Warzone, Cold War is a huge game as well. The game is already around 150 GB in size and we all know how large the COD updates generally are. Imagine downloading a 50 GB patch with your download speed stuck at 1-2 MBPS.

How to fix slow download speed

The funny thing is, you will see hundreds of fixes for this bug or issue on the internet. But trust me, none of them work. By trying those fixes you will be just wasting your time and nothing else. So how to fix this problem?

Sorry to say, but there is no “free fix” for this issue. And I am telling this because I was struggling from the exact same issue. I have a 250 MBPS Fiber connection where I get a download speed of 28-30 MBPS almost everywhere. But on the Battle.net app I was getting a download speed only 1-1.5 MBPS which downloading Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. And it is very frustrating as you have to sit for hours before you can even launch the game.

That is when I decided to try out a VPN. I already had a year long subscription to a VPN called Private Internet Access. So all I did was:

  1. Installed Private Internet Access
  2. Set VPN Server to US New York City
  3. Restarted the Battle.net application
  4. Restarted the download

My download speed went from 1-1.5 MBPS to 18-20 MBPS. Yes I know that it is not 30 MBPS but it is way better than waiting countless hours for a single update to download.

This issue is not only exclusive to the Battle.net app, but it is a problem on the Origin launcher as well. Without turning on VPN, I get horrible download speeds while updating or downloading Apex Legends.

The slow download speed is not an issue from the side of your connection. It is a server related issue which can only be fixed by Treyarch. I have tried downloading other games from Battle.net as well and every time I got my full download speed.

You can use any good VPN for this actually. You have to just make sure that the VPN you are choosing doesn’t have data limits.

If you have a fix that doesn’t require you to use any VPN or any third-party application then do let me know in the comment section below. Also, you can check out the other Call of Duty : Black Ops Cold War guides on Frondtech. Good luck!

That’s all folks!
